Dear Kazuko,

Tipped off by a distraught former University of California—Irvine (U.C. Irvine) student, PETA learned that the university conducts highly invasive in-class experiments on frogs and rats. The frogs are pithed, which involves piercing the brain and spinal cord with a sharp instrument and moving the instrument around to damage the brain. Then their hearts are removed, and the students remove the frogs' sciatic nerves so that they can run electricity through them.

Rats face an even worse fate. Students drill into the heads of healthy rats, drop in poison and staple the wound shut to create a crude simulation of Parkinson's disease. After giving the rats two weeks to recover, the students poke the rats with blunt sticks to gauge how much brain damage the rats have suffered. The rats are killed at the end of the experiment.

PETA has already contacted U.C. Irvine about these experiments and suggested ways that the school could transition to a humane curriculum. Now, we are calling on you to help end these cruel classroom experiments. Please contact Michael V. Drake, chancellor of U.C. Irvine, and politely ask him to end these experiments and implement humane, non-animal teaching methods in the university's science courses.

Please help us spread the word about the use of frogs and rats in U.C. Irvine's classrooms by e-mailing this important information to your friends.

Sincerely,

Julian Carr

Flower Essences for the Fiery Times.
2008-07-04

The following piece is written by Longwillow, trusted Flower Essence practitioner in Sonoma Co.. regarding the essences that are useful to take for ourselves and the animals during the 2008 Extreme Fire Season.

Hi everyone,

This goes out to all my amigas and amigos in the north bay who are dealing with smoke from the fires.  It's been pretty intense here in the west county...and so i wanted to throw out some suggestions for how we can help ease some of the stress on our systems.  This applies to humans of all ages as well as our four-legged friends.  Remember, they are way more sensitive to smell than us.

As we all know, we are only in the beginning of the fire season and already a serious rash of fires has erupted.  It's likely there will be more.  The more obvious implications are on the physical level...many of us are having symptoms whether it's a sore throat, sinus pain, breathing difficulties, itchy eyes, etc.  It's having even more effect on those of us who deal with chronic health isssues, or have been sick in the last few weeks because our systems are already compromised.  Keep in mind though that our systems are also being impacted on other levels as well.  These are distressing situations for us whether we are directly affected or not and are emotional bodies register it, too.  And, we are all aware that the north bay fires are just one example of a much larger imbalance...which is happening all over the planet in both big and small ways...our systems register that, too.  And our spirits...well, just check in with your own to know...there is an impact on that level as well.    (Click on "Read more..." below to continue)

Matika's Message
“Matika’s Message”

Kazuko Tao

In communicating with deceased animals, they quite often tell their person(s) that they continue to live on in that person’s heart.  The human companion can connect with their deceased animal by being in touch with their own heart space. I have always embraced this concept as an incredibly healing way to bridge the physical and spiritual existences.  It affirms no one ever dies and we all continue to exist.

An opportunity presented to speak with Matika, an animal who went missing and whose person suspected that he had passed on.  Matika talked about continuing to live in his person’s heart, and he further discussed what “living in his person’s heart” meant.  Before this, I had never visualized spirits living in our hearts quite the way Matika explained, yet it made a significant difference in my understanding of this concept.  Through Matika’s explanation, I was fully able to feel the meaning of “live in the heart.”

The following is a portion of my communication with Matika.  He encouraged his person to be in her heart space, rather than focused in the mind, as important to her overall well-being.  (Click "Read more" to continue.)
